What does an affirming faith community look like?

I want to try going to a congregation again, but I've been burned before by places that called themselves "welcoming" and turned out to be anything but. When I visit a new community, what should I actually look for? Are there specific signs, words, or practices that distinguish a truly affirming faith community from one that's just tolerant?

Look for outward and visible signs such as a rainbow flag or trans flag. Look to see if there are queer people in positions of leadership and visible members of the welcoming team aka ushers and greeters. Listen to see if an inclusive message is preached from the pulpit or can be seen on bulletin boards. Look for a community that marches in the Pride Parade and leads visibly in the community on the issues you care about.

A place where all are welcome, all are cherished, and all are treated with dignity, respect, and LOVE.

An affirming faith community is one that will love, accept and respect who you are and where you are on your journey without the expectation of changing you. An affirming faith community will love and surround you in both celebration who you are, walk with you through the hard times and encourage you in your healing that belongs to you, not their expectations of what your faith should be.

First, recognize there is a difference between welcoming and affirming. Welcoming faith communities may allow you to attend services, but may not completely affirm you or include you in the life and ministry of that community. An affirming congregation will do that. There are many signs of an affirming community. Check them out before you attend!
